Being that this is the first installment of ” Out & About,” I will start with a brief explanation of this portion of the blog. As a guy who enjoys the wonderful world of watches, one of the first things I notice about a person is generally their watch. Thus, the name “Out & About” is appropriate, as these observations never cease, and are often made while, out & about. At the movies, watching TV, in a busy mall, out for dinner,on vacation, walking down the street, reading a magazine, driving or stuck in traffic, my eyes are always on the hunt for a horological feast . This is a common obsession among watch enthusiasts, or “watch nerds” as some would say. I have named this condition Watch & Time Fixation, or WTF for short.
Recently while out at the movies with my eldest son, he pointed out a gentleman wearing a particularly rare pair of shoes. My son has a bit of a shoe obsession! My eyes quickly made their way from his sneakers to his wrist where I spied a most impressive IWC Big Pilot.
After we purchased our tickets I saw the gentleman once again in line for popcorn and drinks
I approached at the napkin dispenser and told the gentleman that I noticed his unique choice in watches. He was happy to stand and talk watches for a few minutes. We talked about the IWC he was wearing which was purchased in Germany on a business trip. He explained that this was his first “real” watch and he had purchased it with the intention of passing it along to his son. This concept, purchasing something that will be passed down through multiple generations is somewhat unique to the world of the watch collector as there are very few items one can purchase that will in fact, outlive the original owner and become a treasured family heirloom.
These moments of camaraderie and openness are very common among watch enthusiasts, and very much a part of the watch collectors experience.
Keep your eyes open, you never know what gems you’ll spot
